Alchemist Question

Posted: March 4, 2011 in Uncategorized

At the start of his journey, when Santiago asks a gypsy woman to interpret his dream about a treasure in the Egyptian pyramids, she asks for one tenth of the treasure in return. When Santiago asks the old man to show him the path to the treasure, the old man requests one tenth of his flock as “payment.” Both payments represent a different price we have to pay to fulfill a dream; however, only one will yield a true result. Which payment represents false hope? Can you think of examples from your own life when you had to give up something to meet a goal and found the price too high? well i think that the old man believed in satiago. And that the gypsi woman believed that the boy was gonna find a treasure. but i think that she was false hope..And in my life i wanted to go to college but i didnt have enough money to pay for college. So i figure i pay for it myself by me going to the navy. And following my own personal legion.

I believe that the gypsy’s payment is representing false hope. The gypsy is not sure that Santiago will ever be able to find his treasure, she just based her payment on a reocurring dream that Santiago had. She also satated that it wasn’t her first time giving information and not getting paid. This could indicate that she was unsure of what she was saying. The old man, on the other man, proved that he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t guarentee that Santiago would even find the treasure, so he wasn’t giving Santiago false hope.

My personal goal is to gradutate high school in the top ten of my class. I have given up countless hours in my day as well as sleep to try to stay in the top ten. I feel like I have invested too much of my time in studies and litte time is invested into my community. But I shall follow my personal legend and see where it leads me.

I believe the old man was giving false hope. The reason why is because the old man asked for his sheeps and the Gyspy asked for 1/10 of his teasure. Meaning that the Gyspy know that Santiago was going to get his teasure.

  5. Endya Watson says:

I think that the Gypsy asking for one tenth of Santiago’s treasure was false hope. The actual treasure may not have been something you could take one tenth of. There was also a possibility that Santiago would never find the treasure. Santiago could have assumed that the Gypsy asking for some of the treasure meant that he would definitely find it, that’s why it was false hope. In my own life, i have had to give up things to meet a goal. Specifically, i really want to be able to go to a summer journalism workshop at Emerson College in Boston. It’s really expensive and i don’t want to ask my mom for all the money. Therefore, i have been trying to cut back on shopping, or going out to eat with my friends, etc. It is hard to avoid spending money but being a Journalist is my ultimate dream and i know going to this program will be worth it. hopefully.

  6. My dream that I have is finishing up my degree to be a social studies teacher from Kent State. To accomplish this dream, meant that I had to cut back on a lot of “fun stuff” so I can focus test and pay for school. For example, I have to cut out vacations because that is money that could go to school or books. Another example is hanging out with friends which I had to cut back because that is time that I could be studying.

  7. Tor Smith says:

I learned a long time ago, that in life, anything worth having will require a sacrifice. The fruitless self-gratifications in life are often free or easy to achieve. However, the rich and bountiful life experiences require dedication and hard work, like your education. You all will reap great benefits in the future from all of your hard work and dedication.

  8. Dairian Heard says:

I believe the old man wanted non-tangible things in return instead of treasure. i believe he wanted Santiago to tell him something that he learned or something that he valued during his time searching for the treasure.
