Live Learn Teach

We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn

– Peter F. Drucker

We are all constantly taking steps forward in life and in our education. Steps Like; 9th to 10th grade, graduating, getting accepted to college or evening gain a college degree. We all have made some type of progress. Because all of  the FLA members are at different stages in life and in education we can help pull each other forward. How can you pass down your knowledge to someone in your community? (Look up programs at your school or in your community. Explain what they do and how you can pass your knowledge on to someone else.) If there is a web site with the info remember to cite it and post it with your response.

It is very important to be apart of local and national programs of mentorship. However, it is also important to remember that individual mentorship is just as important. I would like to believe that working with FLA, as well as other programs and young people, is making good use of all the information I’ve learned.
Continuous learning is also important. My alma mater- Hampton University, believes in an education for life. We are always students. This is a valuable philosophy, considering the fact that so many people arrive at a certain station in life, and consider themselves “done” and unable to learn anymore. By continuing to refine and enhance our own mental capacities, we become more refined community resources, and provide an example of endurance for any that may be watching us.

“We are always students,” is a great quote. I believe that it is very true. Learning never stops.

One way that I plan give back to give back knowledge to my community, is by participating in Freedom Schools. Every summer college students sacrifice their summers to work and facilitate a great cultural awareness and literacy enrichment program. Giving back, is a great way to move forward. I encourage you scholars to participate in this program, it’s national and geared toward personal and community development.

    • Brandon Proctor says:

I agree with you Tor, Freedom School is a wonderful program for young people to help make their community better. I learned sooo much from working with the program this summer. It was a great way to give back to the community.

Giving back to your community is very important. There are so many ways that you can give back to people. But the way that would be best for me would be peer to peer, or one on one, type of learning. That way you can teach that person the right things. At my school we have a group called Leaders With Pride. We do different things around the school that brings our small school closer together. I’m also in my student/class council and we do different things, striving to be leaders and show people that they can do better and be better.

  4. Brandon Proctor says:

This is one of the many reasons that I started my non-profit Books Forever. I wanted to help give back to the community which has helped me get to the point I am at in my life now. The best way I figured that I could give back is passing on my love of books to everybody.

  5. Kimsa Nguyen says:

One way to pass down knowledge in a community is tutoring younger children or people that needs help. No child should be left behind. Also, I agree with Brandon. Passing down books to people in the community is a great way to pass down knowledge.

  6. SabinaD says:

I could help kids in my community by simply answering thier questions honestly and fully. Not enough people take kids seriously and just skim over information because they think they can’t grasp the concepts. If more fate and expectating was given to kids they may start to have it for themselves.
