Does the Green Balance Out

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which have been overcome while trying to succeed.

– Booker T. Washington

With this quote in mind, do you believe that the social, economic, and technological advancements we as human beings have made are equal in worth to the damage we are doing to the earth? Do you think our advancement is worth the sacrifice of our future?  Use statistics to support your answer. Remember to cite where you found your information by share the website address.

Modern technology Owes ecology An apology. – Alan M. Eddison

I am a strong believer that man-kind’s hast for advancement has scarred our past, future and earth. For example: nuclear technology was created to power technology but, because of man kinds general fear of each other the first thing created was a weapon; atomic bomb. According to http://www.democraticunderground.com over 300 nuclear weapons have been tested since their creation. It takes 1000’s of years for the radiation from just one of those weapons to disperse so what kind of effect could this be having on our environment if that much radiation is just floating around our plant.

Wow, I have never feared a nuclear bomb but I have feared nuclear power plants. Japan, United States, and several other countries utilize nuclear. In the current events, Japan has suffered from an catastrophic earthquake and tsunami. Both disasters have threaten the integrity of some power plants. These plants contain toxic nuclear liquids and gases that could change life on earth as we know it. Republicans and others have been pushing for more nuclear power plants in America. I believe that this is an example of how humans can devastate our planet, in the name of human achievement.

I hear what you both are saying but you guys are being very “dooms day”. Of course there are some negative outcomes to human advancement but the the good far out ways the bad. For starter I am having a conversation with you right not over the air, I also have access to all kinds of information that before was only available to the upper class. And think about all the alternative energies when have created to power the earth and help people. To wrap it up all im saying is there is bad, but the good out weighs it.

It was a little Dooms-Day-ish but Ive been really pondering the Japan situation.

  5. I believe what is happening in Japan is a good example of how advance technology can really harm our environment. With Japans desire to have cheap energy, they felt it was a good idea to build nuclear power plants all around their country. They built them knowing that they lived in an earthquake and tsunami zone. What happen next…a “dooms day” scenario in which their country was hit by an earthquake and a tsunami at the same time and caused major problems at one of their nuclear power plants.

Because of their desire to have advance energy supply, people had to evacuate a 50 miles around nuclear plant, toddlers can’t drink tap water and nobody wants to buy produce from Japan. What is even sadder is how Japan tried to cool this nuke plant. We are talking about the most advance country in the world when it comes to technology, using water hoses from fire trunks to try to cool the fuel rods. It is just sad to me that we as a planet can come up with all the “advance technology” such as iPads, iPhones, iMacs, Kindles, Internet, Key-less cars, but none of the technology helped the Japanese’s people when they really needed help….

I feel that the social, economic, and technological advancements that we have made are unnecessary for us to thrive as humans. We are putting our wants in front of our needs. What use would a car be if there is no Earth to use it on? What use is electricity if there is no Earth? We are destroying our Earth and there should be no comparison if the good outweighs the bad. Sure we have good luxuries, but what is the point if we aren’t able to live on an Earth that is capable to sustain life. We have been neglecting the longtime effects of all the social, economic, and technological advancements that is put upon our planet. There is no good or bad when our planet is at risk. And I know that with all of the advancements that humans have made, we cannot reverse all the damage that we have done to our planet.
