This months theme is environment. As you know our earth has very limited resources. And there are many ways that you can Reduce Reuse & Recycle them for our future. Now that you have seen what happens to your recyclables, explain other methods to Reduce Reuse & Recycle that can be implemented in your home and community. For example: riding your bike somewhere close instead of driving and have bike lanes add to city streets. Please go in to detail on how you your family and your community can adapt your plan. (Remember to site any outside resources that you use by giving the link.)

  1. Tor Smith says:

I do a couple of things differently, now that I am environmentally conscious. For starters, I never litter, I don’t wash my car more than once a month, and I bought a motor scooter to help cut down on air pollution and gas consumption. Being an environmental hero isn’t that hard to do, the key is doing something. When you see people being wasteful of limited resources say something, “Hey that’s not cool, we have to take care of the Earth so the Earth can take care of us.”

  2. Marvin Perry Jr. says:

I really can’t answer this question due to the fact that I don’t drive , but I will start doing as Tor said with washing my mom car once a month. I will also talk my family into not driving to close places such as corner store , to my little brothers school and , etc. I will also encourage that my family start exercising because we are going to do a lot of walking for now on!

  3. devin Butler Freedom says:

Somethings that i have done to become more evironmentql friendly are; switched all the light bulbs in my room to the eco-friendly kinda. I also i set my computer to constant power save mode. To reduce my carbon foot print I have been taking the bus everywhere in th city of Kent. The only time I will drive is when I need to got to Cleveland.

I believe that improving the bus system and developing an electrically or solar powered bus would be a great way for kent to reduce its carbon footprint.

    • That is a great idea Devin, I have never caught the bus in Kent, how much does it cost?

      • Lauren Bottoms says:

The bus is free Brandon. If you have to get to Akron it costs i think $1-2 and to Cleveland i think it is $5-6. I agree with you Devin. I actually have began unplugging things when I am not using them such as my computer and TV. I also only drive when I need to go back home. I normally walk everywhere on campus. Another thing I do based on this month’s session is that I recycle a lot more.

  4. Sadar Muhammad says:

One thing that would help my family and my community in terms of the invironment would be if the city of Cleveland collected recyclables like they do in the suburbs, that would be very helpful to my community because right now I live in the hood of cleveland(until I move out in the summer) and since the city doesnt collect our recyclables most of them get thrown away. So by having adequate reycling in inner city Clevland could be very beneficial.

    • That sounds like a great idea Sadar. I suggest that you find out who is your representative is on the city council and write them a letter voicing your concern over the lack of collected recyclables in your community.

      • AAron Humphries says:

So ture great idea. Like Brandon’s suggestion. That would definitely get the ball rolling and from there you can see what your working with.

  5. Just like Tor, I bought a scooter to help cut down on the pollution that comes from driving a Jeep around, and to also help cut down on gas use. Another simple step I follow to help cut down on waste, is turning the water off when I brush my teeth. I forgot how much water is wasted by having water running while brushing teeth but it is a lot.

  6. AAron Humphries says:

I totally agree with what has been said so far! What I have been doing is I drive less. Seeing how I already drive pretty far to work on a daily basis I keep from using my car when I don’t have to. I have also begun to recycle instead of throwing everything into the garage.

  7. Kimsa Nguyen says:

I agree with all of the ideas above. Also, I could help my community by informing them of the pollution they cause when a car is idle. Car idling could contribute up to 200+ pound of carbon dioxide in a year. Car idling is when you leave a car on and it is not in use. For example, when you “warm up” the car,, you are releasing carbon dioxide into the air. You also release carbon when you drive extremly slow in your car. Another way to is to make bins, like the ones in the video, but on a smaller scale. We could have it inside our homes in every room and the bins could be made out of anything, like boxes or large containers. And the compost could be kept in the backyard for those who wish to make compost piles.

** Car idling information came from a Student Enviomental Congress that I attended.
