About

The Freedom Leadership Academy is a new program under the Office of College Pathway Programs at Cuyahoga Community College in Northeast Ohio. This pilot program is funded by The Cleveland Foundation.

Freedom Leadership Academy’s Mission

To identify and fortify academic and leadership skills, cultural awareness, and healthy lifestyle choices in scholars, thereby creating sustainable, intergenerational and global communities.

Program Overview

The Freedom Leadership Academy (FLA) infuses language arts and mathematics while targeting the development of leadership skills bonded with civic engagement into a literacy-based program that is innovative, interactive, and uses virtual technology.   Scholars are actively engaged in supplemental learning experiences, which are relevant while fortifying language arts and mathematics competency. The FLA creates professional development opportunities for future educators and leaders utilizing as a lab approach its “sister” program, Freedom Schools. Our Program Advisors, Program Assistants and Junior Program Assistants receive extensive leadership training and development opportunities.  Scholars and staff are encouraged to maintain interactive contact and communication via our Virtual Leadership Community while learning how to navigate through a virtual world.

Leadership Development Progression in FLA

  • Jr. Program Assistants (JPA): Serve as “servant leaders in training”. JPAs work closely with Program Assistants to fulfill their specified duties, serve as peer representatives for advocacy purposes and act as liaisons between staff and scholars.

  • Program Assistants:  Serve as junior staff members assisting Program Advisors, primarily with curriculum implementation, technical assistance, and portfolio evaluation for scholars and sophomore staff members.

  • Program Advisors: Serve as senior staff members and assist the Director with administration, recruitment, curriculum development, curriculum implementation and serves as social service liaison including recommending proper nutrition guidelines and other supportive health services, along with performing other duties as assigned by the Director.
