Political Fitness 101

This month we have talked about a lot of different facets of healthy life choices. We have talked about stress, nutrition, violence, substance abuse, and fitness. We even had a skating party so you could bring your friends and family out to have some healthy fun. You have also told us some ways in which you plan on using what you have learned to foster healthy lifestyles in your communities.

You are a high ranking politician (i.e. president, governor, mayor, congressmen). Create a plan for your State or Nation to foster healthy lifestyle choices in a community larger than your neighborhood. Make sure to address all the issues in the paragraph above. If you use a source to find information be sure to cite them.
Here are some examples of sources to help you get started but, you will need more.

Don’t Distress, DE-STRESS!!!

Posted: January 19, 2011 in Uncategorized

Try thinking of alternate ways to deal with stress from everyday issues. Tailor your approach to your specific situation. For instance, You fell asleep doing your homework and did not finish it. Your were late for first period because you tried to finish the assignment but still did not have time to. How can these issues cause stress? How you can avoid these issues? (Tip: Try searching the web for good stress relief tactics. Remember to cite your sources.)

Stress is simply the adaptation of our bodies and minds to change; and change, as we noted, is about the only constant left in the workplace.”

What can we do???

  • According to The Obesity Society (www.obesity.org)

  • In the the year 1980, nearly 6.5% children aged 6 – 11 years were obese. For 2008, percentage of children obese were 19.8%.
  • In adolescents, (aged 12 – 19), the obesity statistics jumped from 5.0% (1980) to 18.1% (2008).
  • Almost 30% of kids eat some type of fast food everyday of the year. If the consumption of fast foods is at such a high rate, it’s not surprising if children are at a risk of getting obese
  • Almost 25% obese adults were obese in their childhood.
